Japan – Travel Requirements

All travelers entering Japan by air must complete the Visit Japan Web registration before arrival. This digital platform collects essential immigration, customs, and quarantine information and is required for all travelers, including tourists and business visitors.

You must complete your Visit Japan Web profile and submit the necessary forms before your flight to Japan.

Before your departure, always confirm whether your nationality requires an ETA for entry into the UK.

Passport Guidelines

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Japan. Ensure it is in good condition with blank pages for entry/exit stamps. Japanese immigration may ask for evidence of return or onward travel.

Travel Information

Be ready to provide your flight number, arrival date, and accommodation address in Japan. Visit Japan Web is only required for entry, not for departure.

Proof of Accommodation

Have your hotel booking, Airbnb reservation, or a written invitation from your host available. Immigration officials may ask for exact accommodation details or contact information.

Health & Safety Declaration

Travelers may need to complete a brief health questionnaire through Visit Japan Web. If you feel unwell before travel, consult a healthcare provider. COVID-19 testing is not required for most travelers but stay updated via official channels.

Customs & Declarations

Declare all items over the allowed limits, such as cash over ¥1,000,000 or high-value electronics.

Prohibited items include illegal drugs, firearms, and certain agricultural products.

Duty-free allowances apply to limited amounts of alcohol, tobacco, and gifts.

Travel Insurance

Not mandatory, but strongly recommended. Travel insurance should cover:

• Medical treatment (Japan’s healthcare can be costly for foreigners)
• Flight cancellations or delays.
• Theft or lost belongings.

Currency & Payments

The local currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY).

Major credit cards are accepted in many places, but cash is still widely used.

It’s smart to carry cash, especially for smaller shops, rural areas, and some restaurants.

High season: March to May (cherry blossom season) and October to November (mild autumn).

Low season: June to August – hot, humid, and includes the rainy season.
